Dave and Renee Strauss, of Direct Kitchen Distributors, were both born and raised in the Fullerton section of Whitehall. The two knew each other since second grade and married while attending Kutztown University. In construction all his life, Dave started working summers and after school at his father's construction company at the age of 13. He has been involved in home improvements-specifically kitchen design, ever since. A former Whitehall teacher, Renee started as a truck driver/delivery person in the company's early days and now is in charge of decorating and marketing.
The Strauss's son Steve has been with the company since its start (see information to the right). He joined the company full time as a partner with his father after receiving a business degree from Lehigh Carbon Community College. Knowing the look the younger generation wants in a kitchen, Steve brings a fresh, new perspective to the company.
In 1981, Dave, Renee & Steve started the business in a model home in Cementon, where they rented display space. They built a new showroom and warehouse in 1985 at the present location. In 1988, they doubled the showroom display space and added 3,700 square feet of warehouse space. In 1995, an entirely new building was added with State-Of-The-Art equipment for countertop fabrication.
In 2003 we started our X-Press store. While our Design store in Whitehall could handle the entire project from start to finish, our X-Press store specialized in the materials that go into your kitchen or bathroom. Excellent prices and next day delivery set us apart from any other cash and carry retailer in the area.
Once again, we have responded to our customer's requests. In 2008 we combined all of our services from each of our store divisions into one location. Our X-Press store speed is now available in our Whitehall location.
Direct Kitchen Distributors carries kitchen and bath (and every room in the house) cabinetry from several different manufacturers, so that we can provide exactly the style and price range each client wants. We also provide appliances, countertops, flooring and other related kitchen and bath items. This way, clients can fill all their kitchen and bath needs at one location.

Steve Strauss is the president of Direct Kitchen Distributors. Based in Whitehall, PA DKD is celebrating its 26 th anniversary this year. Steve has been a part of the family business since he started as a delivery person at the age of 12 and moved up through, installation, sales and design. All through high school and college, he continued working in the business. Over the years, he has been involved with every facet of the kitchen and bath business, becoming president of the company in 1992. Steve is an active board of directors member of the BKBG, a national group of kitchen and bath dealers committed to excellence in their field. He is also certified by the National Kitchen and Bath Association as an AKBD (Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer).
A message from Steve:
I have seen a tremendous change in the kitchen and bath industry in the last quarter century. At DKD we have always tried to stay at the forefront of the industry. Now more then ever, we are seeing changes constantly. Through our affiliation with industry organizations, educational seminars, continual research, and dedication to the highest standards, we remain on the cutting edge. We are eager to see what exciting changes lie ahead in 2008.
What I find fascinating about our company is that we operate under the same beliefs that we did years ago. You will still receive the same individual attention, to make the entire experience unique. We work with you, paying careful attention to every detail. I have used the phrase "big enough to serve, small enough to care" many times.
